NATIONAL DAY AWARDS  - Commendation Mrs Janis Kok, Ex-Vice-Principal (Primary)
  • The Ex-Vice-Principal of the Primary Section, Janis has proven to be a dynamic leader, able to gel all staff members cohesively together. Staff look up to her for her clear and yet consultative direction. She is truly someone who lives up to our 4 MOE corporate values as can be see from the major projects she initiated or participated in for the last 3 years.

Before her appointment as vice-principal in CHIJ St Nicholas Girls (Primary), Janis was the HOD in CHIJ St Nicholas Girls' (Secondary). In 2003, she led the teachers and pupils in her department to collaborate with an external agency to bottle our own St Nicholas oxygenated water, LifeSpriNGS, which was sold for a period in NTUC supermarkets and even at our airport. To commemorate our 70th Anniversary in 2003, Janis and her team published "The Mustard Seed" comprising 70 original recipes, contributed by various members and stakeholders of the St Nicholas Family, which was well received by all who purchased or received the cookbook.

In 2004, Janis managed to enthuse a group of teachers and pupils in another project of writing and illustrating original short stories in English. The stories were later translated into Malay and Tamil Languages and burned into DVDs. It was also in 2004 that Janis co-organised a cluster competition, "Snack Attack", and again led a group of teachers and pupils in coming up with their very own healthy snack which was called "Oat Cubes". This project was featured in the 2005 MOE Excel Day at Suntec City and was awarded a Gold award in the 2005 NIQC. The team also won the Outstanding Team Award in 2005.

"Learning is indeed her passion" and "Excellence her pursuit" as can be seen from her sharing at conferences: in 2004 at the Global Conference for Excellence in Educational Technology" on "Crafting Authentic Projects" and in 2005 at the Asian Regional Association for Home Economics.

The SNG family congratulates Janis on achieving this prestigious National Day Commendation Award 2006.
NATIONAL DAY AWARDS  - Commendation Miss Susan Lim, HOD/PE& Aesthetics
  • The opening of the Sports School was a challenge to our school as we have traditionally been the leader in the sports arena. In her role as HOD, Susan  displayed great integrity, wisdom, fore sight in managing the varied needs, aspirations of the students, parents and school. She supported students who feel that the Sports School offers them a better alternative to pursue sports whole-heartedly and for the rest who choose to remain, Susan led the department to implement a special programme, namely the Sports Class structure to help these students to balance both sports and academic demands. St. Nicholas captured the double championships in Track and Field in 2004 and lost the ‘C’ division championship to the Sports School by only 1 point in 2005. This year, she emerged runners up in both divisions and gave the Sports School a very good run for their championship titles.  The school has also continued its sustained achievements in sports, winning 17 national top 4 sports titles in 2005 and 15 this year.

In our annual student perception survey, students have overwhelmingly endorsed the success of our PE and CCA programme. They looked forward to PE and CCA sessions as these helped them to develop life skills and build a sense of esprit de corp. The school has achieved sterling and sustained results in uniformed groups, performing arts and physical fitness. This year, it was awarded the SAA in Sports ( 4th Award ) and Physical Fitness ( 7th Award ). In addition, it achieved the SAA in Performing Arts for the 7 golds in the SYF in 2005.

Despite her busy schedule, Susan is actively involved in external committees. At the National level, she helped organised the National and ASEAN Schools Track & Field Championships. At the zonal level, she serves in the Colours sub-committee and Sports Development Committee.

For all her achievements, Susan has also won the Outstanding Individual and Team Awards in 2003 and 2004 respectively.

The SNG family congratulates Susan on achieving this prestigious National Day Commendation Award 2006.

Cheleen has clearly proven her leadership ability as she connects and works effectively with students and staff. For her holistic approach to moulding the young and being the voice of both teachers and students, Mdm Cheleen Chua is awarded the Outstanding Youth In Education Award 2006
Outstanding Contribution Individual Award for MOE Staff Mrs Fung Hwee Hua
  • Congratulations to Mrs Fung Hwee Hua for winning the Outstanding Contribution Individual Award. In the words of 2 colleagues who nominated her, she is the ‘superhero to the younger Mathematics and CCA teachers’. She has patiently guided and coached the younger teachers to help them to adjust to life in our school and carry out responsibilities given to them competently. On top of that, Mrs Fung is totally committed to help students learn. She has spent countless hours giving extra lessons to students and revising ways to solve mathematical problems over and over with them. The sight of her working with the students in the Family Lounge late into the evenings is familiar to many. Mrs Fung is also the subject head attached ( in every sense of the word ) to the Sec. Fours this year. She has laboriously planned all the extra lessons to help the teachers and students to maximize all available time for the ‘O’ level preparations. She is co-chairing the Grad Nite with the level head, Mrs Ong Ming Eng. On top of that, Mrs Fung serves as the School Cockpit co-ordinator. She uses her understanding of the system to streamline processes to enhance administrative efficiency, saving teachers time to focus on other professional matters. Good job! An inspiration to all.

Outstanding Contribution Team Individual Award for MOE Staff
  • You must have heard of and probably tasted our very own St. Nicholas healthy snack, Oatcube. Well, the team of teachers who together with 4 students, put their hearts and souls ( not mentioning hands ) into this hugely successful project is the winner of this year’s Outstanding Contribution Team Award for MOE staff. Not only is this an original healthy snack, the team has also chosen to channel the profits of about $7,000 from this little business venture to fund a reading camp for children run by the Malay Youth Literary Association. MOE also invited the school to showcase this project at the MOE ExCELFest 2005 at Suntec Singapore International Convention and Exhibition Centre. Moreover, the Homec teachers also presented a paper on this project at the Asian Regional Association of Home Economics Conference. It was also the same project which helped the school to clinch a ‘Gold’ at the National Innovation Quality Circle Competition. Well done, teachers. You are truly innovative.
